John Lawrence
Senior Graphic Designer
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.

Education and
Professional History
In High School I was a serious art
student, played in the marching
and concert bands, and had a
pretty decent aptitude for
mathematics. I studied Fine Arts
while earning an A.A. degree from
Chaffey Community College in
1975. I later studied Graphic
Design with a slant towards
illustration at California State
University, Fullerton (CA). Due to
personal reasons I was unable to
complete my B.A., but I've had a
good deal of professional training
elsewhere, and have sought out a
number of seminars to help keep
my design skills sharp and my
techniques up-to-date. The bulk of
my professional knowledge has
come from on-the-job experience
over the past 20 years.

I worked for a time as a freelance
artist, and spent some time
teaching basic art techniques to
grammar school children. After
working a few manual labor
manufacturing jobs, building
computer circuit boards
(SuperTech) and military defense
hardware (Xerox Electro-Optical
Systems), I also worked as an
Electro-Mechanical Inspector for a
short time.

Not long after that, I got a break
within Xerox EOS, and transfered
to the graphics team in Pasadena,
which is where I wanted to be all
along. I kept that job, getting a few
promotions along the way, for
about another 11 years. During
that time, Xerox divested its EOS
operations and sold them to Loral
Corporation. I came to Jacobs
Engineering in 1992 and have
been there ever since.

There are 3 permanent full-time
graphic designers in our document
production and corporate sales
group. We are responsible for a
wide variety of design tasks,
including the creation of proposal
graphics, document design, visual
presentations, corporate intranet
graphics, display panels,
advertisements, and maintaining
our corporate image throughout
each piece.
That's me, the big guy on the right.
I'm standing in my cubicle on the 6th
floor of Jacobs headquarters in
Pasadena, California. Yes, those are
Taco Bell Chihuahua dogs in the
inset photo. I bought 2 of them
myself and have had a few donated
to my collection I guess it's a
collection now, though I hadn't really
planned on it getting to that point.
These are some of the main
characters I toil with on a daily
basis. Each one a little different, but
all of them are fun to work with.
From left to right are Chris Serrano
(word processor), Albert Jackson
(graphic designer), Mark Watt (word
processor), Sherlyn Severson (word
processor & production coordinator),
Mary Villarreal-Uribe (word
processor), and Arnold Leos (graphic
designer).
Last winter, most of our group was temporarily
moved to the 3rd floor proposal war room to
concentrate on a "must-win" contract proposal
being submitted to the US Air Force. These
cubicles are much smaller than we're
accustomed to. Best news yet... we won the
contract! It's great to be part of a winning team.
In the photo at left you see Sherlyn Severson,
Chris Serrano, and Teresa Franco, our graphics
temp. Above are Arnold Leos, me, back by the
window, Infante Almazan (IS tech support),
Teresa, again, and Mark Watt.
You know the guy on the left, but the
others are people that I worked with
at Loral Electro-Optical Systems in
Pasadena, CA, where I earned a
living from 1983-1992. I can't neglect
to show these folks, because they
were much more than coworkers to
me. They became some of my
dearest friends, and I still treasure
their friendships, and love them all.
Next to me is Jennie Figueroa (she's
so happy and she doesn't know
why), then Geri Bertelsen (who I also
worked with at Jacobs for a time,
and who does cartwheels when
she's bored), and my old pal Gene
Levene
(who's living room carpet I
once shot a hole through with a rifle,
and who knows most of my other
embarrassing secrets).
